LJ or not to LJ?
Apr. 6th, 2017 10:54 amI'm starting to see more people posting that they'll stay on LJ. For a while there, I thought I might be the only one.
My rationale for staying is two-fold.
1) The user agreement isn't terribly different from any other hosted social media platform. I'm aware that my content can be used by our overlords for advertising purposes, and that should the police come calling it's up to our masters what they provide, up to and including everything. There's a reason there's a group in Canada called Open Media - service providers here are subject to the same rules. My hubs sees about 50 requests per month at the ISP he works at for law enforcement requesting access to user accounts.
2) As a Canadian citizen it is extremely unlikely that I would be prosecuted under Russian law, BUT the same doesn't go for other users (ie Russians). Even though I'm unlikely to be affected (don't own any communities, don't post or provide sensitive personal data, certainly don't get 3000 hits in 24 hours), I can at least stay to be a witness/reporter if things start going off the rails.
